What our parents say

Lovely staff who are very friendly, my child loves coming to nursery. Lovely new refurbishment and equipment.

Emma Robson

A nursery with excellent standards throughout the year groups. Very approachable staff who communicate effectively ensuring child activities/learning is discussed, allowing parents to understand and be aware of child's development.

Nicola H

I am very happy with everything the nursery had done for my child during last two years.

I am extremely happy with my child's progress.

Being involved with toddle waddle and Dad coming along too, made very welcome by staff in 2-3 tear group and encouraged to stay for snack and making pizza's afterwards.

What we do

Activities

Our day nursery staff follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidance which encourages children to make their own decisions on where they play, using both the indoor and outdoor facilities. Staff are then able to extend and modify learning to suit individual children's needs. Activity ideas will often be initiated by the children or indeed their parents/carers, so that children are interested in what they are participating in. As our nursery is open plan, it is laid out with equipment and resources for each of the six areas of learning, where staff can observe children and feed these observations into a learning journey file which forms your child's progress.

The pre-school children also participate in a home to nursery reading scheme to help support their listening, reading, speaking and communication skills and prepare them for school.

Our nurseries team work throughout the year to support various charities and engage both children and their families in these activities. Charities include Sports Relief, with activities such as baking and physical challenges, to The Meningitis Trust where children and parents take part in a sponsored walk in the local area to raise funds.

Our People

At our day nursery, we have a dedicated, loyal team of 17 colleagues who provide high quality, well-planned childcare in a safe, welcoming, caring and stimulating environment. This combination continues to provide a childcare service that is value for money and of a consistently high standard. All staff have attended various training courses, such as, paediatric first aid, food safety, equality, diversity and safeguarding to ensure a high quality of care at all times. Staff are also given the opportunity to participate in other courses that they feel are beneficial to their job role, and are all qualified to NVQ level 3 or working towards their qualifications. Our Nursery Newbiggin Manager Susanne has worked in childcare for over 21 years and has also completed her BA degree in Childhood studies and the curriculum.

Outdoor Facilities

Our nursery Newbiggin has an outdoor play area that is surrounded by the remainder of the building, making it a safe and secure environment for children to play in. This area is used for all aspects of play, learning and development, where staff aim to provide all of the children with a variety of different experiences. Staff and children also take advantage of all of the local amenities which includes two play areas, one at the entrance to nursery and one at the rear. Away from our day nursery, the children also make weekly trips to the local library, which is very close by.

A large car parking area for parents to drop off and pick up is free of charge, and the local buses and metro run regularly to and from Newcastle city centre.

Parents as Partners

An information board for parents is located at the entrance to nursery which has a variety of useful information, as well as a copy of our latest Ofsted and Quality Assurance reports. Babies aged 3 months to 2 years have a daily diary, allowing staff to record all meals, nappy changes, sleeps and activities to share with parents at the end of the day. The diary goes home with the child each night and is brought back into nursery by parents the following day; this allows communication to flow between the nursery and home.

For children aged 2 years and over verbal feedback is given to parents at the end of each session, with a meal chart being completed for each group so parents can monitor their child’s meals and how much they have eaten. Newsletters are sent to parents each quarter to keep them updated on events, birthdays, new births and new children starting in the nursery. Parents are encouraged to attend parents evening twice per year, in March and October to spend some quality time with their child's key person, where their child's development is discussed and reviewed.
